Question:  Can we meet Hephzibah?

My name is Aladesanmi Olufunmilola Hephzibah but prefer to be called She-Painter (Roller and Brush). I am from Osun State but more Hausa than Yoruba because I grew up in the north. I am a graduate of Estate Management.

Question: Why Interior Design?
Interior Design allows me to express my creativity. I am artistic in nature, I have an inquisitive and creative mind. I also love beautiful and an organized environment plus I have a thing for beauty both in people, nature and anywhere I see it. And I also think my melancholy nature craves beauty and perfection. Question: In your own opinion how can you rate interior design awareness in Nigeria?

Answer: Interior design in Nigeria is okay but lacks creativity. We treat interior design in Nigeria just like clothes and fashion; it has to be trendy, expensive and imported not necessarily creative or innovative.

Question: I see your wonderful jobs. How do you get inspiration for your interior wall painting?

I get inspiration from anything and everything around me; nature, people, fashion, even music. Most importantly each house, building or structure tells me what it wants when I touch or feel them.

Question: Have the business been a lucrative one for you?

Yes it has, in its own way. I will say it’s striving given that it’s new but it’s getting widely known and appreciated.

Question: What are your challenges?

Well, my topmost challenge is that people love my work and they want it but they just don’t think it should cost money because it is not some white lady from the states that is doing it. The second challenge is awareness.

Question: What’s your dream for every Nigeria indoor space and how can you contribute to making it a reality?

My dream is that Nigerians of all levels can have an expression of creativity and colours in their space at an affordable price.

Question: Can you educate us a bit about interior styles and the one most applicable to the Nigerian society?

Widely accepted interior styles are Contemporary, Medieval, Minimalist, Japanese, Modern, Moroccan, Rustic, Scandinavian, African etc. For the style is suitable for Nigerians, I think that is dependent on the individual’s preferred style.

Question: What are your interior no nos?

I will not compromise on standards and quality. I will not rush on a job. I will not compromise on finishing. I will not allow client to buy material.

Question: What are your success principles?

My maximum goal is to satisfy my clients, bearing in mind that every client is unique. Clients are always right. Do every job like it’s my last not compromising on standard for any reason or anyone. I trust God for inspiration and direction on every job. When my client is happy, I am fulfilled.

Question: Your message to Nigerians and upcoming Interior Designers.
Interior designing need not to be about how much money you have, it should be about expressing creativity with whatever amount you have. And to other aspiring interior designers, I will say, they should look inward and bring out the best of creativity in them.
